Considering a D90. Reasonable?

Hi all,

After some sensible advice. I'm considering moving from my D60 to a D90 (much as I'd love a D300, I can't really justify it). I mostly like insect and animal shooting, with a bit of portrait and motorsport / aircraft thrown in. No real interest in landscape.

The following are my reasons.

1. More AF points - I sometimes struggle to hit focus on my D60.

2. More FPS. I'd like to do more car & plane shooting (but only hobby wise).

3. Cabled remote. Good for macros etc.

4. Tethered shooting with on screen preview. I'd like to have a play with this.

In addition to the D60 I have the 18-55 VR kit lens (I hardly ever use this, but it's useful occasionally), a Sigma 70-300 APO and a manual Tamron adaptall SP 90mm.

I guess my choices are (all include selling the D60)

1. Buy a D90 body and keep all the current lenses.

2. Buy a D90 + 18-105 kit lens and sell the D60 with kit lens.

3. Something else (lol)

Any thoughts or other suggestions? Is the IQ of the D90 much better than the D60?

Edited to add: I'm thinking of spending around £1000 including what I can get for the excess kit.

I'm in the same boat at the moment the D90 is tempting me from my D60. The only thing stopping me is a possible refresh of the D90 in the next 6-12 months. Nikon have fallen behind Canon a little with the 550d and must surely have something lined up to replace the D90?

It would be just my luck to buy a D90 then a month later a new body would be announced.

For £700-800 you can get a excellent condition used D300. I'd keep the 18-55 VR over the 18-70 personally.

I bought a D60 this time last year with a view to using it for 18months and then upgrading to the D90.

However I had a go with a D90 after only 6 months and decided to upgrade almost a year early. Never regretted it one bit, the camera is in a different league.

P.S if you decdide to sell the D60 let me know as a mate is after one.

Yes the D90 is ahuge step from the D60 - I have both.....

Nikon havnt fallen behind Canon, they have realised that cramming more pixels on doesnt actually improve image quality, but can damage higher ISO performance. I have prints at A2 from my Fuji s5 (6mp interpolated to 12) and there is no sign of pixelation - and the D90 files have more detail, do you need to print any larger?

The IQ on the D90 is much better especially at higher ISO, its well worth upgrading.

Try and borrow a D90, its really night and day against the D60, and I agree with you the D300 doesnt actually offer that much more at nearly twice the price, the D90 is great value.

Sorry, my bad. The kit lens on the D90 is 18-105mm. Would the same apply?

How do they compare size-wise? I have small girly hands :D.

Its a fair bit bigger, but fits my girly hands perfectly, you really wont look back, the D90 still wows me everytime I use it.....

I have a D90 with an 18-105 VR. At 3200ASA it is absolutely incredible.

I'm a big fan of the D90. A great camera for the money. If i put an image taken on My D90 and compared it to one shot on my D700, i'd be hard pushed to tell the difference. I bought the D700 for better high iso quality where it excels. That is where you'd notice the difference.

Basically i'd say buy the D90. It's a great camera.

Also if you shop around a bit you can get them for very good money now and never pay the full asking price from a shop. I always get at least 5% off any equipment i buy. Gotta haggle!!

I also missed a mint body only that went for £420

I just got a D5000 - but last year was looking at a D90 and kerso gave me a cracking price for a D90 body
worth a try..? unless £/$ is rubbish now

Another thing you'd get with the D90 is a focus screw drive motor in the body, which brings the entire back catalogue of AF lenses to you with autofocus working.

Kerso also gave me a great price for a D90. The only reason I didnt opt to buy from him is that they were american imports and I wanted a UK warranty (plus I was buying mine when the £60 cashback required a UK purchase).
