Considering an iPad2

I gave in and got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 a couple of weeks ago, and gave the iPad to the other half.

I have to say, apart from the annoying widescreen aspect ratio, it is simply a better device than the iPad in every single way.

Smaller, faster, lighter, easier to use, no sodding iTunes, Flash works, much better notification system.

I was a little hesitant as I am not fan of Android on smartphones at all....but Honeycomb on tablets is much better.

you mean flash works at the moment, there will be no future support for flash on mobile devices.

Are you comparing to an ipad or ipad2? Just wondering about the faster and lighter part, also is this notification comparions pre ios5 or post ios5?

What about the easier to use part? Can you elaborate?

We don't own an i anything apart from an ipod but I've just ordered a black 16Gb wifi ipad2 from John Lewis as a Christmas present for my wife.

Apple seems to have some strong price control in place so went with JL as they give an extra years warranty and have the latest OS on it.

Her brother has an ipad already so hopefully that gets me out of any support role. No doubt I'll have a play with it now and then :)
 
Flash will be around as long as there is flash content....i.e. a couple of years. What I care about in a device is the user experience for me, now, not the petty bitching of a couple of mega corps. You going to tell me that the 'You cannot view this media' message on the BBC is a superior user experience to just watching the videos? :P

Compared to original iPad, as in my post. I'm aware the iPad 2 is thinner and lighter, having handled one. I'd say they are on a par.

Notifications are still crap on iOS5. There's a reason virtually every operating in the decade on any platform, has had a system bar with notification icons. It works.

I find it generally a nicer user experience than iOS all round. I like having the system bar/tray with notification icons, I like have quick access to key settings, I like being able to customise my desktops with useful widgets like a calendar and world clock.

People aren't going to update their sites for the flash mobile version though, so as they change their sites and flash has newer features etc, they aren't going to be supported on mobile devices. So any bugs etc that crop up are not going to be fixed.

I agree about the bbc site though. That's the only site I use that has flash that I want to make use of. Hopefully the bbc will update to html5 and then I wont have that issue anymore cos I use the bbc site a lot, but the bbc news app is becoming better and better with not as much need to go to the website version.

They must have made some huge improvements on the 10.1 then, I tried the smaller Galaxy Tab a few months ago and it was pretty awful, all the usual Android foibles, numerous Forced Close issues, a very basic web browser that could (almost) handle flash, there were plenty of flash websites that wouldn't play nice with its browser.

If anything, I would call the Galaxy Tab I tried an oversized phone as opposed to a proper Tablet. Perhaps Honeycomb has rectified most of the software issues, but it couldn't do much for the cheap plasticky finish.
 
I bought a Galaxy 10.1 tablet about 3 months ago and liked its feel, weight and screen but took it back after 2 days, the Keis software was a nightmare, did not work properly with the tablet, photo gallery kept overwriting other photographs, had to turn the tablet off and then on again to see the newly downloaded images...replaced it with an ipad2 and what a breeze to use.
 
I have a galaxy s android smartphone, its brilliant, but iOS5 on the iPad made much more sense, I've used this thing so much since I've got it, in fact I'm using it now to post here.

It's also been very useful for designing the control circuits for my paternoster lift model, using icircuit :)
