Continuous AF in timed release (Nikon)?

Is it possible to get continuous AF on the 10s timer for Nikon DSLRs (D5000 specifically)? I need to take a fair few self portraits to test out shot ideas without models, and it would be nice to not have to buy remote shutters etc. that wouldn't have much use for me outside of that?

Why not a remote shutter? Assuming a ml-l3 infra red remote is suitable they are as cheap as chips, I use mine on a regular basis. love it!

Could be, I'll look into that; although I'm not too keen on having to chuck a remote out of the shot then pick it up for successive full body shots

The ml-l3 is tiny, approx 20mm x40mm x8mm, will fit in the palm of your hand so would not have to be seen, available from as little as a couple of quid on ebay.

Ok, until I get that, is there really no way to get it to AF during the 10s countdown? It seems a little strange, as it wouldn't really affect battery life that badly and it's not like there's any real reason why the body wouldn't be able to do this?
