Convert cassette to cd software

Anyone know what the best software to convert cassette to cd/mp3 via computer? Dad found over 500 tapes in loft! Want all cassettes convert to cds :| I dnt mind if there any free software to download on site or get software at pc world etc.

Might be a bit of work, but "Audacity" is free and you can use line in.

There might be some software out there that detects the ends of songs and cuts them into separate MP3s, but Audacity works fine for me.

best way to do it,
record the whole tape both sides, then create split points where each song begins and ends

Yup, that's practically what I did too. Record the whole side, look on the wave to find the ends of the songs and then cut and paste into a new track.

Yup, highlight the whole song - cut - paste into a new track - save.

Audacity does all of this, but is free. It might have a few more steps, but it is the equivalent of having a lens with Fully auto focus compared to manual with AF confirm. Cheaper, still gets the job done but is a little more work.

Maplins do an ION USB Tape Archiver, it costs £50 but might take some of the hassle out of the job
