Converters and Canon lens

Hi All would really appreciate some clarity and help here...

The kit I have is

Canon 450D and kit lens 18-55
EF 70-300 1.4-5.6 IS USM
EF 55-200 1.4-5.6 USM [given to me]

The problem I have which is why I went for the 450D is I have a neck problem and cannot carry heavy kit around for any length of time - hence why I haven't bought myself a 100-400 lens.

Now the daft question.....I have tried searching but am getting mixed messages.

I'm sure I read the 1.4 or 2 x converters would work not with the 70-300 lens but would they work with the 55-200?

and if so what range would that give me because of the cropped sensor?

My main love is Avation and wildlife so could really do with a longer reach.

Any thoughts or other lens recommendations appreciated
 
Canon converters won't work with any of those lenses. I don't think Sigma will either.
Kenko will work with the 70-300 giving max FF equivalent of 960mm with a 2x and 670mm with a 1.4x. Bear in mind that you will lose 1 stop of light with the 1.4x and 2 stops with the 2x.
I too have neck problems following surgery on my back some years ago and use a sling harness to carry my camera. Have you thought about something like that?

As Trevor has said neither the Sigma or the Canon TCs will work as both have protruding front elements.

The problem you will find with aviation and wildlife is that with a lot of TCs you will lose the ability to AF and the ones that are non-reporting and will AF will be slow to AF. This wil make aviation and wildlife difficult.

When you say aviation do you mean air shows? Is so why not rent a 100-400 for the shows? Obviously I don't know the extent of your neck pain but my experience of air shows is that once you get to a spot you don't move therefore you wouldn't have too far to carry the lens.

the kenko series will just about work on the 70-300mm on a very sunny day but it is painfully slow and not 100% accurate, so i would just use it in manual focus. they do 3 versions i think, mc4, mc7 & pro300. go for the later.

i have an older version of the pro 300 ;)

the 55-250mm is an EF-s mount and so none that i've tried actually fit. including the kenko's

canon and sigma are purpusly (sp?) designed not to fit lenses which are not fixed aperature telephoto lenses.
 
Yep, that outcome was my feeling, but thanks all for your quick replies -

I may need to rethink then, the easiest solution is to get my OH to carry my stuff :lol: however as a former pilot if he can not partake he doesn't spectate at airshows!!!

Have you thought of an alternative strap system - like the Black Rapid - where the strap goes across the chest?
