Hi everyone
I'm looking to buy a canon tele converter to extend my canon
EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto. I'm using it on a canon 7D which I'm very happy with generally, as my subject is wildlife, birds mainly, but at times I still can't get close enough, and when editing, cropping down to a small subject I tend to lose a lot of picture quality, especially when I have a high ISO setting.

I can't really afford at the moment, to go for the next level of lens, so I thought I would go for cheaper option with an extender.
I'm not sure whether to go for the canon Extender EF 1.4x III as I've read some where that you can lose some picture quality with the 2x III. Has anybody used these extenders and what are your views on them, and is there any truth on the larger extender? :help:

Not sure about the MkIII but the MkII does not fit that lens..................and image quality and focus speed would be pants even if it did
 
The only TC that would fit is the Kenko ones but as admirable says if it focus at all it will be slow.
 
The Kenko DGX Pro 1.4 will work with that set up, I know because it does for me lol.

Just remember the lens is now f8 at the long end and it will slow auto focus down quite a bit.
I only really use mine either on bright contrasting subjects or in manual focus.
Image quality is affected but not too much as the 70-300L is a very sharp lens to begin with.

Neither if the canons tc's will work on this lens and the rear element of the lens prevents you from fitting them to it anyway.

OP doesn't mention it's the 'L' version?
 
Yes I have mentioned its an L lens. Sorry guys, are you referring to the Mk II's or the later as well that won't fit? Just read up on Hdewcameras that they are for the "L" series.

Yes mate I took one like that very similar, caught it in a nice bright frame
When I watch a review on YouTube with digitalrev before I bought the lens, he did say the lens was better on brighter days

They only work on lenses with a maximum aperture of f4 or better. It will fit on the 70-300L if you extend the lens to 300mm but it won't auto focus on anything other than a 1d or now the 5d3. Also be careful as when you retract the lens to 70mm the rear element will hit the tc and stop you going all the way back. So really it's not a good idea to use the canon one at all with this lens.

Not so sure if the 100-400 is a upgrade to the 70-300L, yes it has better reach but the newer 70-300 has far superior image stabilisation, faster auto focus and probably sharper too. I'd say I can crop my shots to 400mm equivalent and still match the 100-400 for quality.

Because I'd like to try and keep to the Canon"L" series of lens and I'll be looking over £1200 for one of those and I can't really go that much at the present

No sorry Mike you made it quite clear, its me, I missed the top lines admiring the quality of the shot. Just read the rest of it and see what you mean.
Do Kenko make a 2x as well, and would you convert the range any further if they do? :bonk:
 
Thanks Guys for all your help, I will have a look into the kenko option then perhaps take out another mortgage and eventually go for bigger lens, a 100-400 maybe or look at a prime?

I have seen Kenko 2x converters on Ebay but personally I would only put a 2x on a f2.8 lens or faster.

Many thanks Mike, I'm gonna take your advice and look into the 1.4 till I can possibly look at another lens
