convince me the sigma 24-70 ex is worth buying

Hi folks now im looking to buy a 24-70 nikon to partner my d700, but for the same money i can get the sigma 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8.

I may end up trying to make some money so do i stick with the nikon or are the sigma's up to the job:thinking:
 
just to chuck a spanner in have a look into the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD it has good reviews.
 
If you are looking at third party 24-70's, the Tamron VC cannot be beat. It is superior to the Sigma in every way, and adds VC (VR) to the mox.
 
Don't believe all the hype.

I'll probably get shot down for saying this but I have the Nikon 24-70mm on my D700 and I think it's massively overrated.

Granted I've only used it in daylight and for LE's (at night) however in no way does it give you the "wow factor" that the price tag or reviews would indicate. Going by reviews I was expecting something amazing from this lens but to be honest don't understand why it gets such rave reviews.

I find sharpness is only good around the centre of the frame no matter what f number is used. Go off centre (and I don't mean the very edge of the frame) and I find the performance unacceptable for a professional grade lens - have a look here as this review pretty much sums up this lens... http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_Nikkor_AF-S_24-70mm_f2-8G_ED/

When I bought my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 I was bowled over by the quality but not with the 24-70mm:shake: Out of all my Nikon lenses the 24-70mm is my weakest for IQ. It's the one lens I've tried/wanted to like but just can't so I'm probably going to chop it in for a couple of faster primes.

If I were you I'd save my money and look at cheaper alternatives.
 
It is not. Sigma fast new primes may be a whole new great thing, but 24-70 EX is a blast from their past and I believe due for replacement shortly. There is a massive IQ difference with Canon or Nikon, same for focus accuracy. Tamron does indeed get great reviews, other than occasional QC slip up (same for big guys, maybe not quite as much). Maybe I'll get Tamron myself soon due to VC in the first place (for video work)
 
The VC on the Tamron is very effective and really quiet. I have not shot Nikon mount for many years, but the Tamron's VC is less intrusive than any of my Canon L zoom lenses. You cannot beat an external mic for video, but if you must use an onboard mic and need VR/VC, the Tamron is a good option. The focus motor is also pretty quiet, although MF is of course quieter:).

Have to agree with this. This is definitely a case of getting what you pay for, having owned both the sigma 24-70 2.8 EX and the nikon 24-70 2.8, there's really no comparison - the Nikon wins in all aspects.
