you need something like the Canon M80. Expensive though. I was working (as a hobby) on a device based on ARM CPU and 3.5 inch screen plus SDD hard drives and embedded Linux, but Canon refused to give me access to their SDK ;-) probably because it will compete with their own product. Maybe I should join some reverse engineers

Have a look here http://www.hypershop.com/HyperDrive-COLORSPACE-UDMA-s/64.htm for a backup device. The prices seem favourable compared to Canon or Epson equivalent machines. I haven't used one as I always have my netbook in my bag, but I'm thinking of selling the netbook and grabbing one of these as I never use the netbook for anything else.

The main contenders seem to be Nexto DI Extreme and the HyperDrive Colorspace UDMA - but they are expensive for a hard drive with a bolted on card reader and a low res screen - it's just a one trick pony. They are both close to £300, the same price as a netbook, although they are small and apparently reasonably quick.

Another potential alternative - Archos do an Android tablet with a 250GB hard drive, with 8 or 10 inch screen. I've not yet verified whether the device will copy RAW files from a card to the drive, if it does, then you get all the functionality of a tablet plus the back-up abilty, for about £230 - a better deal than the NextoDI or Hyperdrive.
There are various versions of Archo tablet, here's the spec of an 8 inch with a 250GB HDD. They do versions with a faster CPU etc.

If an android device supports USB host then it's a good way of backing up files onto it's internal storage. If you need to put that onto something else then it's going to require two steps I think.

If you do 2 then it really negates 1.
ie deleting stuff off cards once backed up onto portable storage means you still only have one copy. And it is all on a mechanical device which would be much more prone to failure if dropped, knocked etc.
Personally I would rather spend the money I would on a portable storage device on more memory cards. 8Gb Ultra II sandisk CF is now £17 for 8Gb or £33 for 16Gb.

I own both a NextoDI and a Colorspace. Both have similar positive attributes - they're fast, they're light and they have excellent battery life. They may be one-trick ponies but that isn't a bad thing if they do that one trick batter than any other option.

I made my own homebrew version, with a caddy with built in card readers off eBay from China and an old 2.5" HDD I had lying around. Cost less than £50. However these days I use my iPad.
Having said that, I still keep all the files on cards, as only one copy isn't safe.
