Could anyone recommend a copy stand suitable for holding a DSLR and lightweight enough to use in a county archives office? I have a selection of plans, maps and other documents that I would like to copy.
 
That sort of thing Jacob, but preferably without a heavy base. The maps are quite large, perhaps 30"x24" or thereabouts. I might have to go with a lighter compact.
 
The old Pentax Copi-Pod is light and compact, but not suitable for large documents.

Could you take a tripod with a horizontal arm?

That's the type of thing I had in mind.

I know that for the map sheets I'll be photographing sections and then stitching together with MS ICE afterwards. The advantage I saw in a copy stand like the Pentax was that the distance to subject would remain constant whilst I was moving the camera across the map after I had ballasted it flat (these maps have been tightly rolled for 60 years).

Plan B is as you suggest, using my XPROB tripod with the centre column on the horizontal, and probably my old Minolta S414 compact to keep the weight on the arm (and the noise) as low as possible.

I'll do a practice run on the dining table, see how well MS ICE copes with varying subject distance on the shots.
