I'm sure this must have come up before but having read many pages about copyright I cannot see it.

The photographer has automatic copyright to photographs taken but if wanting to put a C copyright stamp on his photos, does he have to register every photograph or can he have a 'blanket' coverage.

What is to prevent the C being used by anyone who has not actually 'registered' all or indeed any of his photographs?

I appreciate the benefit of having some form of location for copyright to be checked against and to find the actual photographer, but say if an individual logo was simply used with the C and put on the photographs and that logo registered, would this not be sufficient for all present and future photographs bearing that logo?

I hope that someone can supply an answer

Thanks
Malcolm

There's no requirement to register for anything for Copyright, it's automatically applied to the artist/creator of the work, unless it's specifically assigned to someone else. I.E. I could assign you the copyright of one of my images in writing, if I wished (for an appropriate fee, of course).

Thanks for the replies from Matt and Marc, but if you do not register and say I wanted to use one of your photographs that I found somewhere, how would I locate you for permission?

If the photographer is even remotely interested in licensing an image, his contact info would probably be in the EXIF data.

Thanks Guys,

please forgive my ignorance but how do I look at an exif file and how does one add such details to all photographs? My photographs when looking at 'properties, gives details of when taken and by which camera etc but has no details of the photographer or contact details

Thanks

Malcolm

You enter them yourself (some cameras will let you pre-program certain copyright and other info into the EXIF at the time of capture). Extra info gets added by a photoshop action before I export out for web sized files.

I put it all in mine from web shot's to raw files, and if doing photo's for other people then I just put the © plus there name in the corner of the photo.;)

For anyone that does not know to get a © using a PC it's Alt 0169..:)

Is it possible to set a programme to do this automatically when you import them (say Aperture on Mac?)

edit : I was referring to ediing the exif to put in your name and email details etc..

What a lot of knowledge from you all.

Thank you all so much, I will have to get into this once I start producing decent photographs.

Appreciated
