Yes
i am considering getting a 2nd hand 5D2, but shutter count is at mean-time-to-failure of quoted 150,000. i understand it won't fail at 150k clicks, but still would be great to know the cost involved down the line.

anyone know how much it would cost to get its shutter replaced? so i could factor this into a price offer.

many thanks.

If the camera has been looked after and hasn't been on continues for every photographer click
I'm sure she will last past thata

many thanks for fast reply, very helpful.

a local-ish shop at Milton Keynes quoted ball park of £200 to 300. fixation quoted £210 exVAT for replacement of the shutter.

i do understand it will keep going, just want to get a ball park on any cost that i may have to fork out later down the line.

how about a different question, worth upgrading from D3100 to 5D2?

full frame, much larger view finder.
but will require me to sell all my lenses. 18-200mm, 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm prime and 12-24mm. they are all DX, if i want bright wonderful full frame view finder, i'd still have to sale them.

Best off waiting imo and see if the rumours of a D600 are true or not. I've just moved from a 5D mk ii to a nikon setup (D300s) as I'm going to get a D800 in the next month or so. The 5D mk ii is a really nice camera with great ISO performance, but now that I'm getting use to having a 51 point AF system, the difference in accuracy is like night and day. If you stuck with nikon you could keep your lenses for DX mode if you wanted the extra reach but going full frame usually does mean selling up all the crop gear and fully moving over.

Why not the D700? Only difference I can see between D700 and 5D2 is no video mode and bit less mpix. :)

Bit more of a difference than that the D700 has a superb autofocus system while the 5d2's is atrocious.

you can buy a low mileage mint 5d mk2 for 1k ish
it would have to be very cheap and then I think I'd still buy a low mileage one

A colleague of mine had his 5D2 shutter replaced by Canon. The cost was £210 IIRC.

Regards

whats low mileage?
probably something like 1000 shutter releases?

thanks Scott, that's the price i got from fixation.

D3100 AF system vs 5D2 AF system, i'd guess they are pretty even? so all i am getting after this upgrade would be the full frame sensor and superior video mode. i'm happy with that, especially for magic lantern and a lot less jello effect.

also i've got no telephoto lenses, all DX lenses, so getting Nikon full frame would still require me to sell the whole lot. :-/

5d mk2 is currently £1170 from panamoz with the 5% BT discount
now that will be ultra low mileage
