Hi guys, I'm off to the Cotswolds for a few days in a couple of weeks time. We're staying near Chipping Campden and wondered if anyone can recommend any good places to visit. I'm taking my Japanese outlaws who are very keen photographers (there's a surprise!!), but they're now in their seventies so nothing too far off the beaten track.

We're driving up from London and would like to take the scenic route if anyone knows of any good routes for some landscapes on the way.

And please no 'dogging sites'...

Cheers

Jim

We are also there Bank Holiday weekend !

Ok CC is a great place for a base. The "Slaughters" (Both) are lovely and so is Bourton on the water and Morton on Marsh .

But without a doubt the place you must not miss is "Castle Coombe" Try and get there early as it does get busy !!!!

They will love it !

Burford is very pretty, it also has a wildlife park.

It's fairly small, but if you're near the village of Bibury it's very photogenic.

And of course you'll be fairly near to Oxford.

Tetsbury, Malmsbury and Lechlade are beautiful too. There is a boating to be done at Lechlade.

Thanks for all the replies guys/gals - much appreciated. Just getting my maps out now and will mark down all your suggestions. So good to get advice from togs who have already been there.

Cotswold Wildlife Park is superb and very tog friendly, the Madagascar walkthrough is great (open 11:30 to 3:30), the large majority of my photo's are from there!

If your there on a Wednesday you may well bump into me or Cosmix (or both lol)...

I would imagine that the main reason for visiting this area will not be a Wildlife park !
The history and quality of the villages etc will be the main reason. For the Japanese it will be amazing ! I should know.. i have taken many Japanese friends there and they loved the cottages etc. Its like visiting "Kobe" for us !

i live in the heart of the cotswolds (shipton oliffe) so feel i know a few places.
now places around CC:

a great puub for lunch in Paxford, the Churchill arms.
in Guiting Power you have the hollow bottom pub
in Ford you have the Plough
^^^both the above are world famous pubs due to ownership by race horse trainers (Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jonjo O'neil respctively, whether they still own them i'm not sure but there's tons of history in both)

Villages in the area worth a look for the 'average' (sorry!) tourist:
Sudely hill (Sudely castle is a decent day out full of views, wildlife and history)
Snowshill
temple guiting
kineton
guiting power
naunton
^^^(the last 4 are all on the same road in that order)

further a-field:
Bibury (a must)
bigger/towns
Moreton-in-marsh
Stow on the Wold
northleach
Cirencester
Lechlade
Winchcombe

Hope that helps a bit

Charlie

yep lower and upper slaughter are normally packed with tourists in the summer months (by packed i mean about 40 a day but nothing elkse ever happens there)

Just watch out for my best friend, he's good with a paintball gun and protective over his land :rules::razz:

Broadway village is a qunitessencial Cotswol village. on the hill above the village is broadway tower.

As for food and good beer the only Pub worth going to is The Ebrington Arms in Ebrington just to the south of Chipping Campden.

CAMRA North Cotswold Pub of the year

Cipping Campden is pretty and you aren't a millions miles from Stratford on Avon and Sheakspear (if that floats your "outlaws")

Snowhill Nat. Trust property is a very bizare !!!

Wow guys, great replies. I will try to visit as many as I can, (results to follow), but guess what - they are due to fly in on 20th May by.....

Dah...dah BA. *******s. Just when I'm hoping to get going on some outdoors shooting, and I really need the inspiration.

If they want something different, there's legends racing car showroom in Bourton on the water. Always some interesting cars there for sale.

Or just outside Bourton they do Zorbing down the hills just off the A429, plus there's the rare breeds farm, run by Adam from BBC CountryFile - http://www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk/

Shame they are not open on a sunday ! But then again the women will go mad if us guys want to spend all day looking at classic cars (and we would !)

Already been mentioned, but Bibury. Ok - very touristy - but it meets your needs re easy access. Try lunch at Bibury hotel - nice (but quite expensive). Some nice pics to be had from the grounds e.g.
