First question. With Nikon DSLR's (and I'm actually talking about the D750 and D810 specifically), is there a better app than can be used wirelessly instead of Nikon's own offering that offers GPS logging (I know the D810 doesn't natively have wifi built in but I'm looking into options).
On my mirrors cameras (Olympus OMD-EM1 and Panasonic GX7), not only do the wireless apps allows full camera functionality, but also allow GPS tagging via first syncing at the start of the session between the phone (iPhone 6 in my case) and the camera. This syncs the time between the two units and starts GPS logging on the phone. This give me certain advantages. Firstly I don't have to purchase a dedicated GPS dongle for the camera, it doesn't run down the camera battery, and the iPhone is much quicker to get an accurate GPS lock than any accessory I've ever used, and even after a full days logging, my iPhone still has battery a plenty left. It's then a simple case at the end of the day of again syncing the wifi app on the phone with the camera and downloading the GPS track which then pretty quickly Geotags all the photos on the camera - simple. It actually works really well.
As those that have used the Nikon wifi app will attest to, it's pretty crap and is basically just a remote trigger and a way to download photos to the device - no camera control at all. So does anyone know of an IOS app that does something similar to the Mirrorless systems but designed for wifi equipped Nikon DSLR's ?
Second question relates to the first - is there an easy (read cheapish) way to wifi equip a D810 ?
Thirdly, when I go on my city breaks later this year, I would like to take some sort of support but preferably not a tripod. I was thinking about the Gorillapods from Joby, and was wondering if anyone had any experience of which one of they many versions would be best for a D750 or D810 fitted with either a 24-120 F4 VR or 16-35 F4 VR and would hold it steady enough for some long night exposures ?
Lastly (I promise), I have a 10 stop ND grad that I've used quite successfully (a 77mm screw on), but am becoming quite interested in the new variable ND's which give from about 1.5-8 stops. Anyone have one of these and can give any recommendations, brands etc. Are these as suseptible to colour shifts (blue) as the 10 stoppers ?
