Cracked top LCD cover on my Nikon

I have really annoyingly managed to crack to plastic the plastic screen over the top LCD screen on my Nikon D300S. Does this need to be sent back to someone for repair or could I do it myself? My concern about doing it myself would be further damaging the area around it trying to get it off.

I am really p*ssed off as I take great care of my equipment, don't even know how it happened.

You can probably do it if the LCD underneath is still functioning normally. These links are for the D300 (you'd have to check if it's exactly the same part on the D300s):

Someone on YouTube has used a third party glass screen protector on a D300s instead of the Nikon part:

I have just cleaned the wifes rear LCD cover inside, if you follow the youtube videos, its not hard doing your own repairs

Thanks both, I am quite careful so will give it a go myself. Just thinking of trading in and upgrading so this was really unwelcome.
