Creating this effect..

Hi all,

I didn't know where to post this so please feel free to move to a more appropriate section if need be.

I was hoping to take some people shots but wanted them to look like the example below. Please forgive my ignorance however I'm a little unsure how I would go about creating this effect/type of shot. Any advice would be superb.

At the very least I'd start with a black overlay, then bring out the shadows & highlights from underneath it.

I'd prolly duplicate the layer and apply a threshold to it and then set the blending mode to multiply.

I'm not sure that would work - when I play with photoshop whatever comes out is generally as a result of my trying to break it - but that should get you some way towards what you're aiming for.

I'm a bit confused as I can't see an 'effect' :shrug:

Just looks like harsh side-lighting with an odd background to me - or is it the background you mean as an effect?

perhaps effect isn't the correct wording. I was just trying to work out how I can produce the same end result as the examples posted.

Just resample them to the size you want and claim they're yours. Much simpler.
