Crop + 10-22 or FF + 17-40

Gonna start up a freelance business in the future, I'm wondering whether to go straight to full frame and start getting L lenses or to get something like a 50d and get the 10-22.

Does anyone with either combo's have any sample shots for me to see?

Well, I have the 40D, which is as good image wise as the 50D, and the 10-22mm. In many ways the 10-22mm is a better lens than the 17-40L.

Why are you going with an uwa lens??

And it depends on your budget i suppose?
 
Landscape is my passion and is what I enjoy doing most, I don't really want to be without a decent setup because you never know when that perfect sunset will happen. ;)
 
Landscapes don't have to be done with an UWA lens... in fact I personally prefer doing it with a telephoto lens. With a UWA and landscapes, unless you have something very prominent in the foreground to focus on, you're up the creek without a paddle as everything just sinks into the horizon and becomes an insignificant speck. It was one of the reasons I sold my Sigma 10-20 (aside from moving full frame which at the time was an unforeseen move!) as I just couldn't be bothered with all the faffing about trying to compose a good image with a UWA. Move one millimetre and the perspective of everything changes!

There's a guy just a few doors from me who runs his business selling photos (he seems to concentrate on landscapes and people mostly) with a Canon 50D and a Sigma 17-70. I've seen his work and it's really really good. You don't need a 1D/5D and the most expensive L lens to make great work.
 
I've been doing Landscapes with my 18-55 since I first got my camera which was around 3 years ago now. I'm always wanting more coverage - I've only ever liked 1 out of around 1000 shots done with a focal length other than 18mm, I can see where the attraction is but its just not my style - I need wide!
 
Fair enough, hats off to you - you can pull it off, I can't ;)

Why not just get the 10-22 (or other equivalents then) and stick with your other kit for now. Just because you want to start earning money doesn't mean you have to spend shedloads on kit. I have a friend who earns money regularly with a 450D and no L lens.

Of course, its the Photographer that makes the image - not the camera.

I'm quite tempted with 50d+10-22, a lot of reviews say the 10-22 is pretty much an EF-S L lens. The coverage on the review images makes me drool too. :eek:
 
Hi Jack, Middlesbrough? I'm just up the road from you in Normanby.

You could go for a Sigma 12-24mm as you can use it on crop and full frame. Mine is my most used zoom on my 20D although on my film body I use a 20-35mm.

PS. I had the Canon 10-22mm and the Siggy 12-24mm is a much better lens IMHO.
 
I use a 17-40 and it barely leaves my camera now. I shoot a lot of landscapes (although i'm very much an amateur!).

The biggest reason for me sticking with the 17-40 is the build quality. I use my gear as tools, and as such they are not as lovingly cared for as some peoples kit. I like the fact that i can get the lens a bit wet, and throw it around a bit, and have no issues. I don't think i'd be so willing to take a 10-22 out in rain, or sandy conditions.

The 12-24 looks appealing, although on a couple reviews it says front mounted filters can be a pain, which is a definate no-no since I like to stack as many filters as possible on the end of my glass - no less than 5 for my latest landscape shoot. :lol:

Its also a tad more expensive than the 10-22, I think.
 
I sometimes go as wide as 10mm on a 40D with landscapes but 90% of the time it's 17mm+ If I do go really wide it tends to be because of the foreground .

I had one of those and the Siggy has less distortion, less vignetting and more accurate colour.
 
I think the full-frame-sometime-maybe is confusing things. 17-40L is brilliant as a super-wide on full frame, but on a cropper it is nothing more than a very nicely made kit lens, but a bit short on range and without IS!

10-22 is fantastic on a cropper. If/when you go full frame, you will have no trouble selling it for a good price.

Have you tried shooting panormas? Sorts out the wide angle side absolutely and the quality is better even than full frame. It's very easy with auto-stitching software.
 
12-24mm. I suppose that the only down sides to the Siggy 12-24mm are that on crop you lose 2mm and you can't really use filters on the front without the holder being part of the shot. :thinking:

I've never used it on FF, I've only looked through it and it looks wiiiide.
 
I would be considering the Sigma, I've always been quite fond of the Siggy range but the front element - filter situation is enough for me to say definately no. I couldn't live without my filters!
 
Yeah, I bet that look fisheye wide on a FF!
 
I suppose it has to be that way to be FF.

I have a slim Cokin holder and I think it's invisible to the Siggy at something like 20mm on my 20D.

It doesn't actually look fish eye on FF, the lens is very well corrected. There have been FF shots posted on this site.
 
I don't think you can stack filters with any ultra-wide, even on crop, as far as i am aware. Im sure the wide-angle cokin holder has one slot.

Maybe I could cut down, or just hold the filters up against the end of the barrel as close as they will go. I'd find a D.I.Y solution around the problem. :naughty:
