crop camera's

Why do they make them like that? Is it more cost effective hence the reason the camera's are cheaper? Does it mean they can make those camera's a touch smaller? Someone please enlighten me?

Have been on a wedding workshop today and really noticed that at 50mm, I had to take several steps back - not always ideal. I suppose there are zoom lenses that are a bit on the wider side but even 24mm is akin to 36mm on the 500D....

Is this when people start to change their kit?

It a lot cheaper to make crop sized sensors than full frame ones.

It stems from the early days of digital when it was prohibitvly expensive to produce full frame sensors.
The cost of the top of the range Nikon D1 at the time of release in 1999 was over £4k.

It had a 2.4MP crop sensor and 4.5FPS.
Just think how much a FF sensor would have cost back then. It took Nikon until 2007 to realease its first full frame camera in the D3, and again was over £4k at launch.

To a certain extent, and in one of two ways. They either buy lenses that match the camera, or buy a camera to match the lenses. The latter, after all things considered, can occassionally be the cheaper option.

Personally I take the third option, and use mostly full frame lenses on my crop cameras as it suits my style.

So, on that aspect, are the Canon EF lenses full frame lenses and the EF-S crop? I am starting to think about 'future-proof' purchases so the only EF-S lens I own at present is my kit lens (and I have borrowed the 55-250mm IS which seems like it could be a decent little lens)

Yes EF lenses will work on any body, EF-S are designed for crop bodies and will only work on them.

With regard to future proof, you only need to worry if you are def going full frame - 5D for example

Yes, and lenses designed for crop sensor bodies can also be smaller and lighter than their full-frame equivalents as they don't need to cast as large an image circle.

Another small benefit from that is that the autofocus mechanism will draw less power as there's less glass to move about = better battery life/smaller battery for the same life.

Thats not quite right:

EF-S Lenses = 1.6 Crop.
EF Lenses = Any sensor size.

Don't be to worried about future proofing if your buying good quality crop lenses second hand (which I recomend) then you will loose very little money should you sell and go full frame. Dozens of people talk about going full frame in the future (myself included) but many take years and years to do it if they ever do so you might as well get the best glass for your current needs.

Yes that's the accurate statement.

What I really meant was that there are more than just 1.6 crop and FF in the EOS line up.
