...is their a technique for when to or not to crop, for eg I have cropped this, imagine 20% more grass to the left and 20 to the right...did I do the right thing? or am I cropping just cos I can?

The crop tool is your friend

Does the final image look better? Then do it.

I find though that the more images I take the less I find the need to crop every one, its a learning process.

Fill the frame, then you can't crop. And you'll be getting every last drop of quality.

Any cropping should, ideally, be done in the camera. If you do it in post, you are throwing away hard won image data. If you've got 10mp, why only use 6?

To crop or not to crop eh? Sometimes it is needed but it is best to think about your composition whilst taking the shot... fill the frame to your best advantage!

Well, you've succeeded in getting the dog's face more or less on a thirds intersection and its running into the frame. If what you've cropped out is "empty" grass, then yes. It works.

I find I crop a lot less these days. However, lately, I find myself tempted by crops to unusual size ratios. I reckon that would look wicked with the dog cropped to the centre and as a tall, narrow shot.

Then with the words "HOLY MOLEY I'M GONNA EATCHA!" in the grassy space at the bottom. In big wobbly 70's poster lettering.
