I'm new to this all. What's the difference? I've got a D40 and was looking at getting a 50mm Prime, but someone told me that a 35mm Prime would be like a 50mm on my D40 because it's a "crop sensor". Can anyone explain this to me? :)

This is true on a crop sensor you have to times the lens with the crop factor, 1.5 on Nikon so what you have been told is infact true.

If you can try both before purchase, give it a go. You will find that the 35mm on your D40 will allow you to see much more in the viewfinder.

haven't checked prices lately but

on the D40 you need a lens which has the focusing motor IN the LENS...designated AF-S

i think the 50mm AF-S is expensive - whereas the 35mm AF-S is about £160

also, indoors, the 35mm is a better choice as the 50 [equivalent to a 75mm] is too long

i have the 50mm 1.8 on my D7K and it's a great portrait lens given it's crop size of 75mm

But to answer a question

Full Frame (FX) a 50mm will be a 50mm

Crop sencors (DX) take your 50mm half that (25mm) add it to the 50mm so you get 75mm

Zoom lens say 70-300 would be 105-450mm

i have lots of older Ai/Ais lenses and many of them are as cheap as chips.yes you do have to factor in the crop sensor difference and ok !!,so you have to use them manually with no a/f but if you are on a budget there are bargains and some seriosly good Ai/Ais lenses to be had out there.and another thing to consider is that using your camera manually will teach you far more about photography and camera functions than any A/F lens will

I thought I was going mad when I discussed this with a mate at the weekend, glad that's cleared that up

Peter ...dont know when you last looked but Nikkor Ai lenses are no longer ''cheap as chips''

just bought a 28mm Ai for my Nikon F3.... mint at £105.....:'(

Dave...........the best overall value for money on your D40 has to be the 35mm AF-S 1.8 DX at about £160 new

john

ps however if the manual lens route does appeal to you...

have a look at getting a Nikkon 50mm 1.8 series E lens
