Cropping quality confusion!

Yes
This is a hypothetical situation but maybe some of you full frame guys can help.

If I was to take a shot of something (anything) with say a D700 and then took exactly the same shot with a D300, same lens etc, would the image from the D700 be superior to the D300 image if it was cropped so the subject appeared the same size in both images?

Does that make sense?

As said, it depends on how you look at the question?

They are both approx 12Meg pixel sensors, so the cropped full frame image will result in less pixels over the same sized image from the D300. But as you know, pixel count is not everything, it's how the sensor/electronics deal with the pixel information... noise, lighting, ISO, subject itself etc etc even how the lens performs full/cropped sensor. It's an impossible sweeping question

Ok let me put it slightly different.

Would the D300 image be any better quality then a D700 image that was cropped to same size as D300?

Have a look at this comparison I did yonks ago between the 20D and the 1DMK2n. The differences you see here would be proportionally the same with the 40D and the 1DMk3. The 50D with 50% more pixels again than the 40D, has moved the game on again out of all recognition.

I know this gets cerebral, but what you have to look at is the full size (1:1) image from the camera - you wont see any difference in the viewfinder between a 20D, 40D, or 50D. Don't forget that as the pixel count has increased with each new camera, so has the size of the 1:1 file. Looking at a 1:1 file from each camera at once shows you the increase in the size of (say) that Wren, captured by the camera.

The 1DSMK3 with it's massive 21mp images, and the new 5D withe same pixel count will perform very slightly under the 40D when it comes to the cropping advantage and pixels per Wren left after cropping. The new Nikon with a mahoosive 24mp on a full frame sensor will probably be about equal to the 40D or as near as makes no difference.

The 50D is streets ahead of everything else at the moment - for the next couple of weeks probably anyway. :D
