Hi all have a question about cropping your pictures?

Is this part of the parcel in picture taking? The reason i ask is i just cant seem to get close enough to what i am shooting, Even when shooting things like flowers it is always as if i need to crop the shot to get it the way i want it.

As always Thanks.

Lenses will determine whether you need to crop or not! If you are finding your lens won't allow you to focus closely enough to frame flowers nicely..then it might be worth considering extension tubes or a macro lens.

Yeah i get that but is it normal to do a bit of cropping?.
Also is there a way to prevent image loss while doing the crop.

Not a problem with good Canon lenses.:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Pete.

As a rule, I try to get the right lens and right composition to avoid any major cropping and thus not adversely affect the quality of the pic. Remember that your feet can be as good as a zoom sometimes to get closer or there may be a different position to get a picture from. When I do crop, i try to keep to photo ratios wherever possible, unless I'm trying to do something special. Only when lens, feet combo won't work do I think about a shot where I know i'll have to crop later.

Well in that case, it is very rare I crop..I always try and limit myself to what lens, camera and feet can achieve! Sometimes, of course, it is unavoidable of course....

Hi, I use a Canon 20D which has a 95%-ish viewfinder field of view. When composing I often bring the subject very close in to the edge of the viewfinder frame to allow for the additional margin that is not visible in the viewfinder. This usually reduces the amount of cropping required but it is marginal (sorry for the pun). I totally agree with other comments re:lens/subject combinations but this may be something to bear in mind.

I never thought about the 95% view in the finder that is a point i will look into though i think my D90 is 96% dont think there will be much in it though.

Ok on the cropping, Is it better to shoot in raw if you think you are going crop the shot later or is there not much in it to shoot in jpeg i.e, picture quality??

nothing wrong in cropping imho, not every picture suits 3:2 anyway

Better to use RAW if you think you might need to crop. If you use JPG then everytime you make a change and save the file you are reducing the image quality. If you crop the RAW file before you convert it you haven't compressed it.

I just gave the crop a go there but my pictures end up small.

Is there a way you can crop and keep the image the same size, dont no if im coming across right but what i mean is in cs you can select the zoom tool and the image stays the same at all times but when i crop i end up with a small picture in the middle of the screen.

You'll find that happens ...but actually if you look at the bar across the top of the image (depending on software) it will show your actually looking at a percentage size of the full size.

Click, 'view image at actual size'...and it'll go all big again.

At least I'm guessing thats whats happend... Hope you don't mind me jesting with you. :)
