Just can't seem to get any detail under the tail feathers. :(

That's the problem with birds that are black, when the light falls from the top. There's plenty of detail in the other feathers. He needed a light shining up his jacksy !!
 
A great shot and plenty of detail in the rest of the bird no one would get detail without extra light underneath
 
Shoot it..stuff it..glue it to a post..Position a wireless flash below and Heh Presto..

Great shot of a difficult subject i'd be more than chuffed with that.
 
First class shot! Common as these birds are they're very wary and difficult to get close too.

You should be able to raise sufficient shadow detail by using a feathered mask on the shadow area, but you should get a better result from the RAW image than I have here.
