That's the problem with birds that are black, when the light falls from the top. There's plenty of detail in the other feathers. He needed a light shining up his jacksy !!
First class shot! Common as these birds are they're very wary and difficult to get close too.
You should be able to raise sufficient shadow detail by using a feathered mask on the shadow area, but you should get a better result from the RAW image than I have here.
