No
With both of these railtours arriving within 15mins of each other I didn't have time to move so had to shoot both at the same spot, usual dreary weather.

First up was Vintage Trains "Shap Mountaineer" with Great Western Castle Class No. 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe" up front and unassisted.

"Earl of Mount Edgcumbe", 16/03/24.

Followed shortly by S.R. "Battle of Britain" class No. 34067 "Tangmere", heavily assisted by a diesel at the rear.

"Tangmere", 16/03/24.

The reason for the B of B needing assistance is that the GWR designed their locomotives to climb hills and the SR didn't.:)

You could be right, the Bulleid locos were built as "light" Pacifics.
Quite some years ago now I was told by a retired GWR driver that the reason the GWR had continued to use the 4-6-0 wheel arrangement was that it concentrated more of the locomotive weight on the driving wheels. This gave the locomotive better grip on steep inclines such as the South Devon banks.
