Custom Cropping and Printng

If i want to get a photo printed, do i need to crop it with a particular ratio to avoid stretching to fit or white lines?

I did read something the other day and but got confused with the maths

Depends on what you want it printing to - your D5000 shoots at 3:2 ratio, so you will get a 6x4, 9x6 etc, if you want a 10x8 then you need to crop to that size, do you follow this??

I take it if you plan on printing its best to avoid custom cropping?

Yup, or you can crop a copy of your pic, keeping the original keeps your options always open
