Cut my grip off

Well in the end I've had to cut my grip off my 50D, it was stuck on the screw had gone & it had slowly shook free not loose just the gap between the camera and the grip was getting bigger, big enough to slip a thin hacksaw blade through and cut through the screw.

Just wondering if there is a way of fixing it now that i've got it off in pretty much 1 piece apart from the mounting screw.

Cheers.

Couldn't you have partially disassembled the grip instead of taking a hacksaw to it?

I'm guessing the screwy bit isn't very complex, so if you fail to source a direct replacement it shouldn't be too hard to make one (if you're handy or know the right people).

Can you post a couple of pics up?

Is it the screw in the grip or the insert on the camera that is knacked?

let me guess , another bg-e2 failure !!! , dont know if it is fixable to be honest , what i would be doing is beating canon up over it , especially as they released the bg-e2n to cure the fault :bang:

Its a BG-E2n grip, the only way to disassemble it would be off the camera all the screws are on the metal plate between the grip and the camera body[stupid design].

I'll post up some pics in next couple of minutes.

maybe abit agricultural, bit drilling out the screw that goes into the camera, re-tap the hole, then a new screw should see you right. my advice, take it to you local milling shop/fabricators! make sure it's insured first

sorry , i was under the assumption that the 'n' version was the solution , ignore me :bonk:

You can get reversed drill parts, especially for removing partial screws from screw holes. Try to get one of these (a screw remover set is £10 from Wilko)
As for the other end, send it back to canon with a strong letter, filled with something even stronger.

pics are links cause they are big

There isn't anything stuck in the camera i got that easy, its just wondering about new gears and such for the Grip, I am thinking Strong letter to canon could be in order and see what they come back with, at the end of the day i've not lost anything other then the grip obviously lol.

Hi. I have not had one of these apart as I have the BG-E3 and that has a straight screw for attaching. This looks like it has a thread with a cog on it so a straight replacement isn't on. Try e-mailing Canon to see if they do a replacement part for your grip, better and cheaper than a new one at least!

If you undo the top plate you may see how it is attached. It should be fairly straight forward to fix as the thread will be something like M6(maybe smaller).
If you can take a pic with the top plate off it will help.

Try calling Canon to see if a size part can be ordered.

I've read a similar thing on POTN before. It happened to a few people. Someone said he sent the camera back to canon, the other did the same thing as the op.
They "say" the BG-E2 or E2N has plastic gears inside.

My third party grip has metal gears - I can see it through the gap where the thumb wheel is.

It would be nice to post some pics when you've undone the top plate of the grip.

Just tried to take the plate off going to have to take it to work and drill out one of the screws as its well stuck in the hole :(.

The thread will be 1/4" Whitworth which is the standard tripod mount thread. the American 1/4 - 20 will fit too.

And you need to change you camera details in your profile!!!

Camera: Gripped 50D

 Handy to know.

Think Whitworth is the same as UNC and you should be able to either buy some thread or a bolt depending on your finding, once you have taken the top plate off.

don't do it yourself, bitch to canon, having a local firm do it will invalidate warranty and no insurance company would pay

Its well out of warrenty now at a guess its only given a year i believe.

I took a hacksaw to it as that was the only way of getting it off cleanly, i've got a repair shop giving me a quote for it tomorrow so see how much it will cost, i'm sure its not just the screw as the gears are stripped when you turn the big wheel nothing happens anymore.

Really need to get the last screw out and have a poke[pics to follow]

They are very similar. Both are 1/4" diameter and 20 threads per inch but the thread of one is cut at 55 degrees and the other at 60 degrees. In practice it doesn't make much difference.
