D09 or save for a D7000 ?

How do folks. I'm kind of a beginner/intermediate and I'm looking to upgrade my current D60 body for something a bit more feature rich.

At the level I'm at will it be worth getting spending the extra on the D7000 or getting a D90, would I even notice a massive difference ?

Any advice welcome :)
 
There will be a difference of course, it all depends if you can see yourself using the added features. Compare the two side by side and check off any features you want against ones you dont think you'll need, then go from there.

And of course remember Lenses > Bodies, almost every time.
 
I had the D90 for two years until Christmas, when I updated to the D700. I did look at the D7000, but it was only slightly less than a second hand D700.

I've not seen any detailed reviews of the D7000 but it does seem to be "feature rich". The advice I've always been given is to go for better lenses than bodies first. Depending on what lenses you have already, I think it's good advice.

ALL DSLR's are over 'featured' IMVHO.

My D90 had a c*$p 18-55 kit lens, was I happy with the pairing, NO.

My D7000 has a beautiful 16-85 lens, am I happy with the pairing, VERY.

If I'd have stuck the 16-85 on the D90 I'd probably have been happy with that pairing also.

Get a 50mm 1.8D, if you have'nt already got one.
Fantastic lens, pin sharp and cheap-as-chips, the best lenses in the NIkon range for the money IMVHO.

depends on feature usage. The big seller for the D90 was the HD movie function. I've never used it. though mine was a gift, I'm not sure what features I would look for on a new camera. More pixels is good, but will you notice the difference? Ditto to a larger screen etc. I guess it comes down to if you can afford it, get the D7000, as you might as well buy the latest kit. If money is more of an issue, get a D90 as its a top notch camera.
 
Plenty of Pros using a D90 as a back up, or travel kit, body. Perfectly good performer.

Learn to use manual, or A with the exposure compensation feature - it's the same thing as manual then (in that you are telling the camera what to do, not the other way round).

As an aside, an unforseen complication of the SLRs with video in them is that the Premiership football photographers are being rejected with these cameras (D90, D3s etc)! THEY HAVE VIDEO CAPABILITY, but the rules of engagement prohibits them videoing as it contravenes the TV rights. Those guys are all rushing out to snap up the last of the D3 bodies to get themselves let in the door for stills photography only. Glad I hung on to my D3 bodies now. I can probably sell them for nearly what I paid!

I've not really played with the video yet but apparently SLR's are being used by the film industry on an ever increasing basis...especially for stunts etc were the relatively cheap cost means they are used on an almost disposable basis. One of my mates brothers has a business which rents out professional film/video cameras to production companies...or I should say had a business. It's killing them.
 
I went from D60 to D90 and was blown away by the difference. I'd certainly recommend it, although if I was doing it again now I would definitely be tempted by the D7000 instead. Either camera will give you a seriously good upgrade.
 
Thanks for the idea and input, I'll have to have a think about it as I'm in no rush at the moment, might even wait till late spring which might solve the money issues :D

D7000 has more pixels...so files are larger. What PP do you do? How powerful is your computer? Do you shoot RAW Will you need to upgrade computer as well to handle the larger files?

Do you shoot in low light conditions frequently where the purported better high ISO performance of the D7000 be a real plus, or do you shoot most often with bright sunlight or flash, etc.

If it were me...I would opt for the newest technology I could afford...but that's me. A lot of people enjoy buying yesterday's technology at a discount. Heaven only knows that the D90 has taken a lot of superb photos and is not known as a difficult camera to master.

So...it's up to you.
