Hello all, I have a d40 and I'm thinking of upgrading it either to D200 or d90. I could get a used D200 with less then 4000 actuations for less then 160 pounds. I think that is a bargain?
Why Im upgrading? I want bigger viewfinder, better handling ( meaning less menus) and d40 feels too small to my hands.
And I'm on a low budget so no d300 or newer...
Any thoughts?

I've owned both. The D200 is a great camera, it's built the same as a D300, weather sealed, tough, no cheap plastic. But, where it fails to deliver is on the ISO performance. Which is why in the end I sold it on to buy a D90. The D200 is really not great once you go above ISO 400. For any indoor shooting you'll want to pair it with a hot-shoe flash. When you add in that extra cost, a used D90 is the better option.
 
hi... shame no d300 ;) think they are around the 400-600 ukp mark?

d90 has the same sensor, but d200 would be closer to the build quality.

Have you handled both? checked what you can use on them?

Probably would lean towards the d90 as the sensor... but if you prefer fiddling with settings you may prefer the d200.

Haven't had many/any problems with the d300... (just the 35mm seems to not focus right) and its a heavy camera. But lots of options!
 
i would save abit more and get D300 if you want the build quality and more buttons etc otherwise get the d90, it will not let you down.
 
Ive had both the D90 and D200 and used a D300 a lot.
The D200 is great, and its a real solid workhorse, however it is getting very dated and as mentioned, doesnt cope well with higher ISO.

The D90 is newer and has a much better sensor, however is slightly less better built than the D200 and D300.

The D300 is great, but is older than the D90.

Out of the 3, Id say a D90 would be a huge leap from your D40 and has most of the functionality of the D200 and D300, just slightly less build quality, however its considerably better than the D40.
 
Thanks a lot for your answers. If I could get a used d90 with 11000 actuations. What would be good price for it? And is 11000 lot for d90?
 
11000 isnt a lot for any camera really.
I would guess around £350 body only.
 
11K is nothing really. I heard someone say once that a camera with less than a couple of thou actuations = new. The D90 is good for 100K. Mine is currently at 45K or so, and still going strong. And I shoot a lot, it's taken me over a year to hit that number on a used one. It had 8K+ initially and was mint.

Expect to pay about £400 I guess.
 
i recently bought a d90 last month. thats had around 10k on it and is still in almost new condition. very very slight signs of use. i love it.

i bought the body and kit lens 18-105. with box and everything for £450
 
That was a good deal ^^ But I'd think about selling the kit lens and getting a 17-50 2.8. I know it's shorter, but the quality is much better. You could get the 55-200 vr for extra reach if needed, for casual use. I happen to have a tamron 17-50 for sale in classified ;) :whistling:

I recently started shooting raw and planning to continue. Does anyone know is there big difference in noise between jpeg and raw format for these two cameras? Or is it so that D200 has more noise regardless of jpeg or raw format?
