Hello everyone, i am totally new to photography and this forum, and have got my first camera hopefully coming this weekend, a nikon D70s with 18-70 kit lens, i have been reading about nikon D200's, is this as good a camera as they say it is?, should i stick to my D70s for a while and get used to that before i even think about things like that?, just after some input really because i bet a lot of you guys have used both?.

Stick with the D70s until you find you're coming up against some limitations with it, then start looking to see which upgrade model removes those limitations and allows you to progress.

I used to have both (OK, mine is a D70, no s) and when I upgraded just over a year ago, I kept the D70 and sold the D200. I prefered the handling of the D200 and it fitted me very well but I always preferred the D70 as a complete package for some reason. The extra value of the D200 helped as well - it went further towards the D700 than the few quid the D70 was/is worth would have done!

Personally I'd never consider aa D70/D70s over a D200, they're in completely different leagues (and I still won't sell mine even though I now have a D300s). The D200 is an awesome camera.

But, Nod's advice is good. Stick with your D70s until you find yourself coming up against limitations the D70s can't cope with.

You probably won't find a D200 new anywhere (there might be some new-old-stock floating around, but you'd have to look REALLY hard to find one), so you'll be getting second hand. Given the prices, consider a D2X/D2Xs as well when you come to upgrade. The D200 was always considered "The D2X's little brother", and the cost difference between them at used prices is not much really.

ok guys thanks for that, will stick with D70s untill i know what i am doing!, lol.

I would probably advise to stick with the D200, why not start off on something pro for a modest sum? It's not going to drop a massive amount buying it used now and then selling on again if you need to, and it's SO much more accessible in terms of handling. The viewfinder, Autofocus, FPS and screen especially is also FAR FAR better than the D70s!

i agree, but only from research, it all boils down to funds i'm afraid. :'(
