Am I right in assuming that, the last generation on Nikon DSLRs (D50, D80, D200, D2H, D2X) did have good sensors, but that the current generation (D5000, D90, D300S etc) are much better with noise control? Say I was to get a D200, would I actually get poorer quality images compared to my D5k, as it has the old ISO technology? I understand I would be better off in the build wise, but quality wise, have Nikon come far in that todays entry level is much better than the older pro one? Hope I make sense here!

Better sensors and processing software on the newer cameras...definitely.

I'd go for a D5000 over a D2x if IQ was the only concern.
