D2X or D300?

i dont own a nikon (and never will do:D) but i would personally go for the d2x, i dont know much about nikons but afaik the d2x will have a better build and improved performance the only downside really is its an older model but not that old.

could you by any chance give us the spec of both camera's so i could give a more detailed conlusion:)

no contest if you shoot anywhere in low light really, D300, gripped, and with the D2X battery in it to give 8fps :)

the only downside is you can't use it as a hammer, unlike the D2X...

On the other hand I would always choose a D2x over a D300 anywhere that doesn't require high ISO.

yep, same.

so all depends what you need it for really.

I like both. I like the pro bodies but I think its more because there the top model. For me I think the D300 would be much better for me because of its lower noise and higher high ISO. Also it can shoot quickly at high resolution at high fps. The D2X has to crop the sensor to get the same sort of frame rate. Also the D300 has a built in flash that I would find handy. If it was my only camera the compact size of the D300 would appeal to me.

Dotcomjohnny, asked the same question here

I love the D300 and the S version but I'm a sucker for a gripped body and the better build quality so opted for the D2x with the firmware upgrade. Plus, it's £400 or so cheaper once you figure in the D300 grip.

Got it today and it's a peach; paid £700 off fleabay but I know park cameras had several in for that price, although I don't know if they were boxed. Check the used section on their website

I have the D300 and D2Xs - the latter being my fav even though it's 4 years old, but I use the D300 more for Weddings as the high ISO ability is at least 3 stops better

I paid £1,000 for the D300 and £3,400 for the D2Xs

I've used the D2Xs when it was pee-ing it down with no worries, I've used it all day outside at minus 5 degrees or colder - no worries, I've shot over 2,000 images per day and the battery has never run low, no worries - I'd be surprised if it had less than 300,000 shutter actuations and it's immaculate - it's now my 'studio' camera and with the £1,100 17-55mm f2.8 the IQ is awesome

Unless I fall over £10+-grand in the street which I can claim as mine & spare for camera use only, the D2Xs is with me for quite some time yet

Perhaps I should point out that I already own a D2X, which has an annoying "Err" message after taking the first after switch on. I was wondering if I should exchange it for a D300 (similar price), minus grip.

Only had the D2X for just over a week, so exchanging wouldn't be a problem, I hope?
Just thought I'd ask peoples opinion as to what they thought was better.

Personally I prefer the D2X, but without the "Err" problem.
I going to contact the shop tomorrow and see what they propose to do about it.
I know there is another D2X within the company, maybe that ones OK and they'll offer the swap? But they did have a D300 too!

Thank to all those who have commented so far this evening.

i owned a d2x from release day until a couple of years ago, middle of this year had the option to go d300 or d2x again and i went d300 (later adding a grip). the only thing that i prefer with the d2x is the build and handling. important factor, of course, but i couldnt go back to the d2x after being spoilt by the d300's high iso, screen, af points and overall image quality.

theres not much in it in picture quality however personally im taking better pictures with my d300 than i did with my d2x

Hi John I think you've answered this one for yourself with the statement "Personally I prefer the D2X, but without the "Err" problem"
Stick to your guns and get a different one sent out to you that doesn't have a death rattle!
Cheers Andy
