Basically as the title says.....

Is a d2xs better than a D200 ??

Im looking to upgrade my body but don't want to go made was think d2xs as has big more mp for larger prints and the large body.

Or maybe a different body?

I could go D7000 or D300s

I shoot mainly motocross now would the focus system of the 300s be better?

To be honsent I would also go for an D300,the D300 focusing is very good :)

I think to be honest it will be the D300/s because I like that I can change my ISO with just a button it's easier and I prefer a bigger body.

Is there any difference in a D300 and the D300s?

no different in term of image quality on both D300 or D300s. If you want video then get D300s but then again the D300s video sucks .......

I won't be using video, thanks for all the replies I'll get the 300 thanks again.

I have a D2XS at the moment and had a D300 before that. Not used a D200 I'm afraid.

The D300 AF system is a fair bit better. It also seems to be a fair bit better at high iso. It's lighter and I would say better value on the used market.

In the D2XS's favour. The general feel and quality of the body is just superb. A real step up from the D300 or D700. It's a joy to use. I also think that the ultimate image quality seems better than the D300 but this only really shines through in controlled conditions such as tripod mounted shots or studio type stuff. The D2XS is also capable of machine gun type FPS which can be useful in some situations.

Horses for courses.

D2 series has excellent weather sealing.

This is a good point. The D300 would certainly survive the average shower but the D2 feels like it would survive a trip to the bottom of the atlantic (though please don't try it).

The ISO benefits of the D300 over the D2 series is probably at most, a stop, before noise gets bad. The D300 is a nice camera and the AF system is very good indeed, although it's more central than on the D2, which has fewer AF points but with coverage closer to the edge of the frame horizontally, if that's something that attracts you.

D300 has a built-in flash capable of CLS; D2 hasn't got a flash.

In terms of megapixels, there's nothing in it really to help printing - both will do brilliant A3+ prints at around 300ppi and up to large scale (say A1) then they'll still be very good.

Ultimately, the body of the camera could be a major deal-breaker. Personally, the D2 feels sooooo much better in the hand, more balanced and more solid. Plus, as mentioned, the weather sealing is first-rate and probably as good as any current camera.

A base ISO of 100 is very useful on the D2 as well, and in the studio it is truly brilliant in terms of IQ.

Thank you for the tip I would rather the d2 over the d300 a special if there is not much in it I prefer the bigger body, I currently have a grip on my d200 and that helps is there a big price difference between the D2 and D300?

Not to much price different beteew the the 2, you mine get a lower shutter count,on most D300.

The D300 ranges £450 -550 mark
The D2xs ranges £550 - 600 mark

:)

you have to consider what you want the camera to do as well. If you planning to do some low light shooting then the iso performance on he D2x may not perform well. But if in good light condition or studio shot etc then the D2x is fantastic for that.

It's amazing when you consider that the D2XS was £3500 new!

I read stats they definitely say otherwise sorry. And also photographers I know that have used both. But maybe it's subjective.

Better colour depth, better ISO capabilities, shoots faster, slightly better dynamic range, two storage card slots...

The D2 is actually smaller than a gripped D300, although you don't get a thumb toggle on the vertical grip, but then again you can reach the main command D-pad anyway.

BTW, you can upgrade the firmware on a D2x quite easily and turn it into a D2xs. Bit of a money-saving tip :)

I really dislike that website. According to that, my old D5000 is substantially better than the D2XS I have at the moment. Maybe I should have kept it...

Given the D300 and D300S have exactly the same sensor I can't really see how colour depth, dynamic range or ISO capability can be different. Maybe a software change, but the D300 can be updated anyway.

The dual memory card and video capability are really the only things that would persuade most people to pay more for a D300S.

The IQ test results on that page are from dxomark. Testing/sample variation of the same models would produce the differences quoted for the D300/D300s, so I wouldn't read much into it. They are as near as makes no difference, which is what you'd expect given that the internals are the same on both models. I've had both, there is no difference.

If I had to choose a crop nikon body then it would be a 2dx/d2x2 over a d300 as it seems more egonomic and better build. In fact if it were not for the very high cost of wide angle prime lenses then I would probably consider one. The cost of a decent 18mm AI or AIS prime is a bit daunting though!

I used my D300S to shoot Motocross last year and the Auto Focus was excellent. The 7 fps came in handy too. :) I could have got an extra frame per second if I'd had rechargeable batteries for my grip. (2 fps extra with grip on D300)

If it is motorsport than I would go with the better AF, the higher frames per second and the better low light performance, (not every sport is on a bright sunny day is it?) and that is the D300. The D2Xs has a more robust body, but the D300 is no flimsy camera and is weather sealed.

If you want the integrated grip though, then it can only be the D2X/s. The grip with the D300/S is pretty good, and gives extra frames per second with the right batteries.

D2x is good and very robust for sure but i personally think a D300/s would be better choice. If you ever want to get a D700 in the future, all your D300/s accessories can be use as well ......

As I said I have friends who had both and saw the difference.

 the image engine is the same in both, if they saw a difference it must have been down to something else. As I said, I myself have used both and there is no difference between the two in terms of image quality.

Would adgreed, their the same camera :)

I don't struggle with the low ISO on my d200 so don't think that would be help by having more.

The only thing that made me go towards the d300 was the focus point and af but i would rather the d2x/s.

Thank you for all the replays
