I've been thinking about what to do with my D3 and thought I'd canvas views/thoughts/opinions from people here as well.

Basically, I've had the D3 for a few years and love it, but it is big and heavy and probably no wonder that the rest of the family refer to it as 'the big camera'.

If I'm honest, I mainly shoot family holidays, the kids etc. so its probably overkill for my needs. But I like the full-frame ability as I have the 24-70 and a few other Nikon lenses from the film days.

Anyway, I've been thinking about selling it/trading it and getting a D700 instead - mainly as its a bit smaller and lighter.

I know that some of the features of the D3 I simply haven't used (like the dual card slots), but other things (like the low-light ability) I have used a lot. Overall, I love the pics it turns out, but I'm wondering if I would use it more if it was lighter and smaller.

My D3 is in mint condition, low shutter count etc and has pretty much been pampered.

Has anyone done this or considered the same thing?

Why not get a D700 and a grip, that way you have the best of both worlds.

My grip lives on mine 90% of the time, but it is handy to be able to remove it if I'm heading out with the wife and kids.

If you won't miss the larger pro body, and you don't use the dual card slots, then I can't see a reason not to change. The D700 is still a very well built camera, and the images will be exactly the same because it's the same sensor. Plus low shutter D3's seem to go for a few hundred more than a D700, so you might have enough left over for a new lens or other camera related goodness!

Only you can know if you'll miss the differences though!

I think you have already answered the question yourself to be honest. The size/weight of the D3 is obviously an issue.
The D700 felt small when I held one a few weeks ago. But I don't find my D4 big.Also my D300 is gripped. I suppose it's just a personal thing.
I would think that if you have the D700 without a grip and have the 24/70mm on the front, it 'may' feel a bit unbalanced.
If you have a grip, it works out about the same in size and weight as your D3, if I remember correctly. If not a tad heavier.
Back to square one.:D

its that massive 24-70 lens that makes it feel so big, I shoot my 1d with a 50mm 1.4 and although it's not pocket friendly I don't find it too big to take around everywhere
 
I switched for the same reasons. I didn't need the dual card slot and preferred the option of a smaller body gripped or otherwise.
