D300 & 18-70mm problems, no Autofocus

Yes
I have recently picked up a second hand Nikon D300 and an AF-S 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G lens (from different sources), but i can't get the thing to Autofocus

I have set the body to 'S' and the lens to 'M/A'

Also, when set to either Aperture priority or Manual the f number shows as zero (f0), so i presume the lens isn't talking to the camera body

So i'm trying to figure out what to do next and see if i can work out what is at fault, either the body, the lens, or myself

Sounds like dodgy contacts either on the camera or lens or both. Start with the simple stuff like giving them a really good clean. You can get solvent wipes from maplin for this bit you could start with a rubber. Just try not to get any of rubber crumbs in the camera. Work upside if possible.

Hi does the camera work with other lens ?,if so you can say the body ok,sometime the AF can go in the lens :)

I only have the one lens (this is my first Nikon) and none of my mates have cameras so difficult to try it with another lens

I will have a go at cleaning the contacts and report back

Nope, still showing f0 after cleaning the contacts on both the body and the lens

My macro lens stopped AF today cleaned all contacts still not working so took it in and they tried it on different camera still didnt work so Ive sent it off to be fixed, I hope yours only needs cleaning

I'm hoping it the lens at fault as i bought it off ebay so should be able to send it back for a full refund if it's not working, hopefully it's not the body at fault as these aren't to easy to buy second hand

:(

Have you tried giving the lens a little wiggle as well in case things aren't quite aligned as they should be.

After that it sounds like it's time to do some further digging. Do you know anybody local with a Nikon body to try your lens on or a Nikon lens to try on your body? At least that'll narrow the problem down.

Yep, tried wiggling and a giggling, still no luck

Unfortunately i don't know anyone local with a Nikon, but i do have a 50mm prime on my way to me this week, so hopefully i will be able to eliminate one or the other later in the week

Sounds like the lens. Trip to a local camera store to try a lens?

Good call, might stop buy a shop tomorrow after work

Looks like it was the lens afterall

I took the body and lens to Harrison Camera's in Sheffield after work yesterday, and kindly asked one of the guys if i could try a different lens on my body and try the lens on one of their other Nikon bodies, luckily they obliged and hey presto, any other lens works on my body, and the lens i bought off eBay doesn't work on any other body........... phew

At least i can send the lens back for a refund via eBay, and i have already bagged myself another 18-70mm for a cheaper price, collected from Sheffield.............. result ;)

Good outcome and certainly cheaper than a non-working D300. Should be a nice combo that.
