D300 and D700 versus D3

Have D300 and D700 and was wondering if it would be worth selling them upgrading to a D3, probably second hand. I do a lot of motorsport and stuff like that. I realise the D300 is a cropped sensor with that extra bit of reach. Any comments on the wisdom of this move?:thinking::thinking: merv
 
Well, I have the D3s (used to have the D3) and the D300. I shoot fast jets and motorsport. I find that I hardly use the D300.
If you've got the lenses to suit and you aren't worried about having a second body, then why not.
Only you can decide really.

Keep what you have and wait and see what Nikon release next - whatever it is, it will be better than our D300's and possibly better even than a D3...

Lots of rumours, none sound like they will dissapoint really.

Probably looking at November 2011 for the announcement.
 
Good to see the old familiar names cropping up again. For planes and motorsport does the full frame not work against you because of the crop factor. It means you need to have even longer lenses does it not? I have a 300/2.8 and a 70-200 VR2 with 2TCIII, a brilliant teleconverter, much better than the old TC2 with no visible loss in IQ. Thats why I tend to use the D300 for sport/planes. What would the benefit be of the D3 over the D700 - isnt image quality the same from the same sensor. merv:thinking::thinking:
 
DX vs FX for motorsport isn't much of an issue if you can get close (ie trackside), maybe more so if you are further back.

On your second question, not a lot of advantages of a D3 vs a gripped D700, other than the grip and batteries are an extra cost.

In fact, the reverse might be true because a D700 has a pop up flash (either as an emergency or as a flash commander) and also has sensor cleaning - which after a D300, you will miss for sure. A D3S obviously is corrects the latter point.

My colleague uses both a D700 and a D300 and when you can get close enough the D700 makes a nicer image certainly. He mainly uses the D700 with short lenses though (or at least at short ranges - ie 70-200 for grid and pitlane shots), but has shot stuff with a 500 f4 on the D700 too. I asked him a while back if he'd get rid of the D300 (or future DX body) and he said not... probably nuff said.
