D300 Auto ISO

I recently attended the Mewla Rally on the Epynt ranges as it was a dull misty and sometimes raining I opted for auto ISO set at max 640. To my horror when I got home and dowloaded the photo's to my pc they were all very grainy and over saturated, I first put this down to using a polarising filter and upping the saturation in the camera, I have since found that the camera was upping the ISO to 3200 on most of the shots but not all, can anyone explain this please.

What mode were you shooting in, and with what settings?

It will over ride settings if needed to get the correct exposure.

Best bet is use manual, set to maximum 3200, and keep an eye on what ISO it is selecting in the viewfinder, if it is getting a bit high for your taste, you can adjust the shutter speed or aperture to bring it down.

I have my D300 set to max 3200ISO, but would aim to keep below 2000 if possible.
 
Hi Flash you just hit the nail on the head checked and the max sensitivity was set at 3200 I had set the top figure to 640, my fault oh well you live and learn :lol:. Thanks for the help folks :thumbs:

not to mention, if you're not getting enough light, lose the polarizer. A properly exposed picture at 3200 would have been roughly 800-1200 when you drop the polarizer- well within the 'looks good' range on the D300.

I was using the poariser for the first time tring to cut down on the windscreen glare.
