D300 Batteries question

I have the MB-D10 battery grip for the Nikon D300

I already have and can use an additional Official Nikon EN-EL3e battery with it
Also have rechargable AA 2800 m aH NI-MH batteries (8) + extras

My question is, is it worth purchasing the BL-3 cover-EN-EL4 (a) battery and an MH-21 battery charger

Would there be any advantage in buying the latter against using the rechargable batteries. The cost of official BL-3 etc would run into at least around £250

I thought the same and considered the same. i then thought you can buy a lot of AA batteries and chargers for £250, so I did.

Normally go out for a whole day with several EL3E batteries (A is not for the D300)plus 20-40 2800 m aH AA type.

Used in my SB 900s with battery pack and the grip tray when needed.

Don`t buy Nikon branded stuff and you are a lot cheaper straight away.

Not sure where you got £250 for a BL-3 i think you mean for the MB-D10 grip ;)

End cover is £30 for the Noink one, i;d be inclined to pick one up on fleabay

I don't mean the grip its the official battery - charger and holder as I originally said for the Nikon EN_EL4 usage.

Flea bay are third party stuff which would invalidate the warrantee if they developed a fault on the camera

Battery charger about £120 approx
Battery about £100 approx
B3 holder about £30 approx

I worked out what was reasonable 3rd party equivilant and it still came to about £165 on flea bay , not the cheapest but not the most expensive either.

Using another EN-EL3e battery in the grip doesn't allow the 7 fps I can get with the rechargable batteries, it stays around 5 fps as if using the camera without the grip.
Nikon claim to get 8fps but I don't know how as on my menu it only goes up to 7fps. But then
again it only shows CL in the menu nowhere does it show CH shutter speed.

Your not getting confused with the D300s are you with regards to 8fps...

edit: scrub that as it seems that Nikon does state 8fps with a MB-D10....

Disclaimer.......this is my opinion and experience only.

I have two D700s and a D300 all gripped with aftermarket grips, batteries and non Nikon chargers. All run the E4 batteries and I have never had a problem. The grips are chinese ebay ones as is the charger ,the batteries are from, 7dayshopp i think. Can`t just remember, but all work fine.

had a wee search....

High-speed continuous shooting
The D300 is capable of shooting at a rapid 6 fps*1, and as fast as 8 fps*2 when using the Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10

*1 When using one EN-EL3e battery installed in the camera
*2 When using batteries other than Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL3e

So it seems that to get 8fps you'll need the EL4 or AA batteries...

Thanks all for your replies. Oh buy the way 7 day shop are now selling own brand rechargable batteries rated at 2900 mah the highest rated I think on the market so I have ordered 4 packs including postage was £17.96.

I`m sure they do the aftermarket E4 batteries, I honestly can`t remember where I got mine, but they last a week at least.I`ll try and recall where they were from, but they are far better than the aa`s.

At the moment my D300 is still within the 2 year warrantee period, and knowing how companies work they will use any excuse to wriggle out of it. Hence thinking about only official Nikon gear for the moment, I may be wrong but tend to err on the cautious side.
I am not saying 3rd party stuff shouldn't be used and quite often is just as good as the camera makers.

When I had a D200 Nikon I did buy 3rd party batteries and they worked fine apart from not registering battery life within the camera menu, may be down to not having a chip on it.

My original thoughts were mainly on the difference in using the 3 battery alternatives within the grip apart from just the price.

As you have the D300s could you look in the menu (d4 on the D300) for me out of interest, and see what the mode shoot speed max is, as mine only goes up to 7 in CL, with no reference to the CH setting at all which your may have.

Thank you

I have Fuji batteries for the D200, they work fine on it but won`t work on the 300/700. New aftermarket ones do however.................

If you feel the need to get Nikon stuff, then that is your perogative of course, I am just pointing out the options.

Had a look thru for you & mine is the same - only goes upto 7 in CL (no CH setting in the menu's, even checked thru the lot) which is D5 on the D300s...
