does any one custom set this on there d300...

i shoot in jpeg, fine.

at the moment, i shoot with everything off, i was told to turn up the sharping by a few steps, should be able to shoot and print straight out of the camera....

can any one comment, i was thinking maybe this could be a great thing but dont have a photoprinter anymore to try... and could be costly going to the labs...

I shoot all my jpeg images in the neutral mode on picture setting on my canon 1D and do all the post processing on the computer, find I have more control this way on my images

A lot depends on your output size... there is a no rule of thumb.

For printing, the usual advice is to size the image to your papersize and sharpen at the last step.

If you want crisp prints, then try around +5.

I should say that my own personal preferences are not for oversharpened images - if you use good glass and good technique, sharpness takes care of itself.

i too wondered about this until i saw an example of "sharpening in camera" on an image on flickr. it looked really good, not as obvious as it is when you sharpen in photoshop. i tried it last night on my D300 and it made the colours really stand out! not yet printed it but im going to give it a try......when the rain stops and i can go outside! the photographer had it set to 9.

I shoot in jpeg only and use a custom picture control that Gribbsy made for me after a load of experimenting. There's quite a bit to getting it right I found to get the right levels of contrast, colour and sharpness whilst retaining detail in the shadows... The settings I have are fairly neutral - I'm using a value of 3 for sharpness and obviously USM it in PP (along with other tweaks).

The result is far better IMHO than any of the presets either shipped with the camera or downloaded off the web.

But to see what I mean you need a good deal of experimentation.

I find my images are becoming sharper the more i use my D300, but is set to default on this particular setting so what am i doing right ?
