Hi Guys,
Is there any way to connect a portable HDD directly to the D300 for in the field backup?

I know there are devices out there to do this but I was wondering if I could do it with any portable HDD?

As far as I know, external hard-drives take power to power themselves from whatever computer they are plugged into... I don't think this would be possible without a laptop to accompany it. I might be wrong, but I don't think this is possible.

In a word no, you need control software to do the copying/filemanagement etc which is why people got for the hard disk devices with built in screens etc (such as the colorspace which i use)

I am using an archos 5 series (300 ish ukp) 250gb

Had to buy a mini dock (30 ukp) but can feed camera into it to offload pics.

For this it excells but for other functions it's meant to have, not really. The brand has been going downhill steadily since I got the archos 500.

There are other brands that do the job too, have a look in the adverts of a photo mag at the back.

As to the question: no. A normal hdd won't talk to the camera.

Not unless you have one of the types of device that have software onboard to do it specifically (as detailed above).

A normal USB hard disk is a client device, just as is your camera. You need something to be the active host, which means something thats intelligent with software running.
