D300 problem.

I mean the indicator that tells you wheather or not a picture is going to be over or under exposed this problem occurs not only on the top plate but in the viewfinder and the rear screen.
 
Afraid of being obvious... are you using manual mode, as exposure indicator only show up here.
 
it wouldnt on any camera Paul, ~( well not sure why it would)

if the camera is calcualting the correct exposure, (which it is in anything other than M) in any mode other than manual it will always be correctly exposed as far as the camera is concerned, therefore wont show the meter. (if it did it would always be in the middle anyway)


edited.... the camera is aways calculating the correct exposure (in its eyes), hence it shows when in manual mode to say... hey, i think with the settings you got this is gonna be over or under exposed.

Just to add to this. I checked on my own D300 last night and meant to report back but forgot. In P, S and A modes, the exposure scale should be visible in the viewfinder and on the top LCD but the exposure indicator will always be centred. In M mode, the indicator can be well off to one side of course depending what you have dialled in. Is this what you're seeing Paul? From your posts it sounds like the exposure meter is missing all together.

Edited to add (and with apologies if you already know this) that the meter goes into hibernate after x number of seconds (dictated by your own selection in the menu). The meter display is not visible when the meter is 'asleep'. To restart the meter you need to press the shutter or other buttons depending on what you have set in the menu. If you simply pick the camera up after it has been resting for a few seconds and press nothing, the meter scale will not be shown.

I just looked on my D300

With the lens cap removed, the horizontal exposure meter only appears with the camera set in Manual mode.

Here is the strange thing ... with the lens cap left on the horizontal meter appears in all modes P, M, A, & S

The exposure meter is visible all the time in m mode. But in P,S and A mode it only shows if I set a for example a shutter speed that will over/under expose the picture.

Aha, I had my lens cap on when I looked. I guess as Paul says then, it displays when it can't make the exposure it wants.

I think theres some confusion here Paul, because in P S and A mode, you cannot set a shutter speed that will over/under expose a shot, unless you have +/- EV set, and even then would only be S mode where you can set a shutter speed.

See above. I guess it only displays when there is an issue.

I don't have my camera to hand but there must be times when you can make it impossible for the camera to get the expousure that it is aiming for with all of those modes. Whether it be with aperture in A mode, shutter speed in S mode or either in P mode.
 
I can't see a problem here.

PSA modes don't show the exposure metre unless the conditions are such that the camera can't choose settings to get a correct exposure.
 
maybe with the lens cap on, 30 seconds wont be long enough, maybe in a very bright light at f1.4, 1/8000 might not be short enough. but i think wires are crossed here somewhere. :)
 
Well I have seemed to have fixed it.... Nothing wrong with the camera may I add (Ben) The setting I wanted was buried in one of the plethora of menus! But thanks anyway guys for taking the time and effort to help me much appreciated!

What if "Easy Exposure Compensation" is enabled in b4?
