Hi - I am trying to take a self portrait for my "About Me" page on my website and i cant get the camera to auto focus when i either use the cable release cord or self timer! All the pictures are completely blurred as you can imagine. Not sure what im doing wrong!! Help please?
thanks

I have fun with this one too! 1 way to do it is put an object in the place where your face will be and focus on it from where your D300 is sitting. Then set it to manual focus and you should be good. I'd probably use a small aperture to increase the DOF though.

This maybe a really dumb thing to say but your sure your not sitting closer than the lens minimum focus point?

thanks stu - i should be fine because im not close to the camera.....its bizarre! i used to use it on my D70s a lot for practicing when i had nothing to photograph and it worked perfectly. Im lost on this one!

so its not just me then! lol
ok, i hadnt been setting it to manual. did you set the timer or use a release cord?

The only other thing I can think of is there is a loss of contact between the camera and the lens, so maybe cleaning the contacts would help. but other than that I would have suggest setting it to manual focusing and pre focusing

I used the timer. Means you can do what you want with your hands if you need them for posing purposes.

thanks - just tried this and its much better! just need to sort out the lighting now.:thumbs:

Excellent!

Lighting is something that's puzzling me at the minute. So hoping to spend a bit of time working on it this evening to help clear up some things.

is AF-ON linked to shutter? If it isn't, AF won't kick on when using remote, you have to press the AF-ON button, or link it to the shutter.
