D300 slow shutter release

I do a lot of macro work and I've noticed that often there is a considerable delay between me pressing the shutter release button and the flash and shutter actually firing.

I've just been doing some work in my snake room and the delay if often 1.5 -2 seconds.

The battery is fully charged and I'm at a loss as I cannot ever remember it being slow like this before.

Any advice of what it could be of what I'm doing wrong?

No just straight shooting.

Real frustrating and only seems to work when I'm using flash etc

Does it do it without the flash on?

If not, then maybe it is a flash setting, others have far more experience in flash and the settings than I,perhaps others can help you.
