From what I've read, the video function was one of the major changes, as was the second memory card (SD) slot. I don't think there were any wholesale changes to the sensor - maybe a bit of buffer increase - and as a result, I think the image-taking ability is identical in terms of noise.

Take a look at this thread that I started a little while ago. I've opted for the D300 by the way. Couldn't justify the extra on an 's'. To summarise: Twin card slots, slightly revised controls, video capability, and a slightly higher fps.
