Yes you can, and you'll kick yourself for not doing it earlier.
When you say "optical slave" what do you actually mean ? You can use the flash off camera and get it to fire in a few different ways
1 set the flash to s1/s2 mode and the on camera flash will fire it - the hand book will give you all the help you'll need
2 buy a set of wireless triggers. Yongnuo are excellent value for money, and use these to fire the flash off camere - you'll loose TTL capabilities and have to use manual mode but hey ho not a big problem
3 buy a lead that will go from the hotshoe to the flash and retain TTL capabilities (depending on which lead you buy)
A useful tip is to check out Amazon's site for the particulsr flash gun you're interested in and check out the comments from owners, odds are that you'll find the answers to pretty well all your questions.

Optical slave, the way you described it is exactly what i meant. Having the on camera flash trigger it.

Its my birthday next week and the parents/wife are buying me a cheapo home studio setup to play around with too.
