Mine indicates only 12 and doesnt increase if I reduce the picture quality. Is this correct, if not what do I need to change to get more?

OK part of the answer is turn active D lighting off which now gives me 26 at fine quality or 37 at medium quality - plenty for me but any other tweaks welcome!!!!

If you are talking about the cameras buffer then a faster CF/SDHC card will increase it a little.
On my 60D I shoot RAW and high res JPEG and @ 5.3 fps I get a buffer of nearly 60 using 30 mps Scandisc extreme SDHC cards.

using basic cards and 12 bit. Switched from SD to CF card and it made no difference, not sure a better card would make a lot of difference, but I guess it would clear the buffer a bit quicker. Max shots set to 100. 26 is plenty, its mainly pairs horse show jumping and that will get both horses in one burst.
 
Faster card makes a reasonable difference upto 30mb/sec and very little after that, there was a study and the effect was significant upto 30x but just afew more pics using a 90x card that is a LOT more expensive.
 
Usually the faster cards simply clear the buffer quicker? I was researching this before I bought my Canon 7D... Decided on a 60MB/s card in the end, didn't want to fork out 2x as much cash on a 90MB/s card.

They do but only up to the maximum write speed the camera can do. Once the card bandwidth exceeds the cameras bandwidth you won't see any improvement.
