D3100 with which lenses?

Hey, for christmas I'm going to be getting a D3100! With the £40 cashback I can either get it for £380 body only or £400 with the 18-55vr. This lens is quite limiting isnt it? So would I be better off putting £20 towards a better 2nd hand lens or just taking it as its so cheap?

If i was going to get the 18-55vr what lens would compliment that?

what kind of photography do you plan to do?

to be honest, for £20, I'd go with the 18-55 VR. Great value lens, and £20 isn't really going to make a difference to what other lens you can afford.
 
Even if you get the kit lens for £20, and don't like it, you would easily make a profit on it by whacking it on ebay.

Plan to do landscapes and also sporting shots, for example biking and snowboarding. So I'm thinking a wide angle/fish eye lens would be good?

18-55 VR.....no,no,no...not in my humble experience.

I've had two, returned them both for a refund, could'nt get a sharp picture with either of them.

18-55 for around £100, methinks you get what you pay for.

16-85 is around £400, must tell you something.

But surely the 18-55 could be sold for a profit, to fund another lens? I don't see any reason why the opening poster wouldn't get the kit lens for only an extra £20?
 
Purely on the basis that a body only is as much use as a f@rt in a wetsuit, I would get the kit lens. OK, it's not a stellar performer but it IS better than nothing and at a cost of £20 is a bargain. Once the OP has got used to the camera and knows whether he/she wants something longer or shorter, we can advise as to what he/she could get to compliment the kit.

You'd be mad not to get the 18-55 VR for £20, used they sell for between £70-90 on Ebay, so at worst it's an extra £40 discount off the cost of the body alone.

If you decided to stick with the 18-55, the 55-200 VR (around £120 for a new one on Ebay) is the ideal one to pair it with.
 
Okay, so after some research I've decided to buy the body with the 18-55 VR lens but then sell it on ebay.

This means I have about £250/300 to spend on 2 lenses. I will be buying 2nd hand what would be the best choice? Thanks.
 
The Nikon 70-300VR is an excellent lens for the money.

The 18-55VR will be fine until you can afford a Sigma 18-55 2.8 Macro HSM.
