D3200 - pushing shadows?

I'm going to pop out at lunch to buy a lightweight SLR body and was going to go with the D3200 (last day of cashback) and then a thought occurred...

How is the 24mp sensor at pushing the shadows up on an underexposed shot? is there much noise or does it work well (as I believe the D5100 does).

Low ISO for a start... On paper it looks like it's not a bad design; obviously 24mp is out of proportion and more than likely will be wasted unless you are shooting something like 50mm f/1.4 at f/5.6 or so.
So it's simple - shoot and recover shadows as normal, add some NR and sharpening (as normal) and then simply export a smaller image - no more than 12-16MP - as JPEG or TIF. That should hopefully get you files that are comparable or better than D5100.
If you look too much at these 24MP aps-c files at 100% you may get sick. Or buy D600 instead.

Thanks for your thoughts, I already have a D700 and the D600 doesn't offer me anything useful for my normal shooting (besides, the sensor oil issue would bug me).


What I want is a (very) lightweight SLR to take with me when I can't be bothered to lug the bigun around but for my style of shooting I often like to boost the shadows in PP. And some times I also sometimes I completely misjudge a long exposure
