D3300, D5300 or D7100?

A friend of mine has asked what the difference between these models are and to be honest, on paper they all look very similar meaning the D3300 wins on price.

The reason the want Nikon is so they can use my lenses and stuff and they want to buy new.

I'm stuck on why 3 similar spec cameras are £440 apart so any help would be much appreciated

He's buying this weekend!!.

What kind of experience do they have with a camera?

BTW, the cameras are not really similar. They are designed for different markets with features to suit.
 
what lenses do you have ? Does he need a body with a built in motor ?
 
They have no experience with a DSLR but used an Olympus OM30 in the 80s.
They have no lenses (just the kit one that comes with it) and they can use all mine - I have a D5100 and all my lenses have built in motors.
But what I can see is D3300 is the basic baby, D5300 adds pop out screen,gps, wifi, more focus point of both types, D7100 loses wifi & gps but gains more focus points, weather sealing, lcd display and a faster fps in crop mode.

My experience with the D5100 shows the pop out screen can be handy but focus is shocking. No LCD is annoying especially at night when you get blinded by the led display even turned right down.
 
I have the 5200 and have never had a problem with focus. It's fast enough for me, but I'm more into landscape type pics- things that don't move very fast!
I do some street shots during the Festival up here and focus is fine.
7100 is more rugged and a bit bigger/heavier, twin control wheels.

It depends how 'in' to photography they are going to be- overkill.
 
I think I'll recommend the D5300 - I've already recommended it to 1 friend and they're happy with it

If it's for a beginner then the d5300 seems to be pretty good as it's the middle ground between the d3300 and d7100. It all depends what your friend wants to use it for, you have summed up the differences in your earlier post. For me the d7100 was the right choice after learning on an Olympus e410. Fast fps, focus points, weather sealing, top LCD, two command wheels and focus motor beat the need of flip screen, wifi and gps for wildlife images. For most learner the d5300 would be great especially as the money saved will buy a nice lens to go with it.
