Hello all.

I had a bit of a blonde moment recently when trying to have another go at water drop photography. The last time I tried this was with my D300 which had a pop-up flash for me to use as the flash commander for my SB600.

Anyway, since changing cameras I NOW understand that I need either a SB-900 or an SU-800 to do the same.

A few questions:

1. Are there any other options?

2. Am I right in thinking that the SU-800 would activate my SB-600 via IR and as such it would still need to be in the line of sight?

3. If I bought an SB900 as the commander will that only activate my SB-600 with a flash of light or can it use IR too?

Pixel King do an I-TTL trigger for Nikon I had a look at them a while back. They don't get great reviews though.

Really your best option is going to be pocket wizards or just use another Nikon flash as a commander and set it too -- in your setting so it doesn't affect your exposure.

Am I correct in my interweb reading that I would need to get an SB-900 as a minimum for it to operate as the commander or would another SB-600 work?

You could use an SB-600, SB-700, SB-800 as a commander as well but I think you have to have the SB-900 for more than 2 groups but I could be wrong. If you are only wanting it to fire one SB-600 any of the above should be fine.

As a cheaper alternative you could always use the SB-600 as the commander and pick up a cheap Yongnuo 568 that is TTL compatible.

Thanks Tommy. As I know where I am with the 600 I might get another one of those, but something I read online made me think it couldn't operate as the commander flash. I'll have another read.
 
I would prefer if it did simply to maintain some flexibility in the kit for use in other applications, but for the water drop shots, no, probably not.
