D4 and 1Dx long term price

Can anyone guess at what the price on the latest pro bodies from Nikon and Canon will be in the long term? Ever since I have looked into it it seems odd that they are so much more than the previous pro bodies when they were new.
The 1DmkIV according to the graph on camerapricebuster seems to have started out at around £3700 then dropping to around £3500 after 6 months and has stayed around that price. I imagine the D3s is similar but there is no graphic data for it.
Contrast that with the D4 and 1Dx starting out at £5300 that's a massive £1600 more than the previous bodies on release! Is the same strategy going to play out and we will see them drop to around the £5000 mark after a few months?

I am looking at these bodies but maybe more in the long term. It still seems they are a lot more money that their predecessors for small, incremental increases in spec rather than the big leap that the price would suggest. :thinking:
 
And the fact the Yen has strengthened by 40% or so in the last 5 years is not helping stem the upwards trend in prices

Yeah that's not helping out much. I guess it's just a really bad time to be wanting to buy a new camera. :|
 
I think you should be comparing the 1Dx with the 1Ds3....the price then looks to be more in keeping.

Is never a good time to buy a new camera and, playing the waiting game can backfire badly in the present economic environment.

Over the last few months I have dropped some £20K on gear. I managed to negotiate a 5% discount from a reputable UK seller for some of it (other gear was purchased from importers). That should cover the initial (expected) drop in price. Having said that and, with europe in economic meltdown, prices could just as easily go up.

So, if you need gear, buy it now and, if you are going to drop £10K or more in a shop, make sure to negotiate a good discount.

I would say the 1Dx is quite a technological leap over the 1D if Canon's blurb etc holds true, for starters its FF and not a crop, albeit 1.3

Even if the D4 does drop to £5000 in a few months Andy, it doesn't matter. You know that you can get one now cheaper than that. Get one bought mate! :thumbs: :D

I am sure most of you have seen my other thread about not sure what to buy. I have been thinking hard and it keeps coming back to the fact that the camera I really want to own is the D4. Yes it's expensive but even if I never got much work out of my photography I would plan on keeping it for a good few years. I wonder if getting a D700/800 now and then deciding in 6 months that it's still the D4 I want is a way of wasting even more money. :thinking:

That's a good point actually and one I had not thought of. As said above am I maybe better to bit the bullet and just get one now with all the uncertainty around the markets at the moment.

The DigitalRev price is good at £4800 but only has one year warranty and limited support compared to UK stockists. Might be important given it's a brand new model with teething problems a possibility. Also maybe issues with registering it for the Nikon Pro scheme if/when I get to a position to be able to do that.
The UK prices of £5300 £500 more but might be money well spent. :thinking:
 
Andy you are planing to expend quite a bit of money.If buying camera and lenses from the shame UK shop, Do ask for a 5% discount (going for a 10% discount may put them off).

I think IF I go for the D4 I will get a 24-70 with it as they have £80 cashback at the moment I think and I will probably get a 70-200 VR1 used for about a grand.
Anyone had any experiences with Dale Photographic? I emailed them and they seem a good shop that isn't a million miles from me.
 
If you are going the Canon route, I would buy UK bodies. The chances are you will be one of the higher ranked CPS members, which gives you some benefits.

Unless you are going to earn money in the short term, I would hold off on purchase, unless you have cash to burn.

I imagine the 1D X will be around 4750 by December.

There are a couple of things that are putting me off the 1Dx. First is the delays keep coming which some seem to be hinting might be due to defects and problems which would of course be a big worry. Secondly I could buy a D4 right now. Thirdly, and this one is very subjective, after borrowing a D3s for a day from someone I know and also handling both at Focus the Nikon just felt more right in the hand and I like the fact that they have several buttons on the camera for things that are inside the menus on the Canon.
One thing in favour of the Canon is that the video mode on the D4 seems to be very soft from what I have read, whereas on my 1DmkIV I found it sharp and I guess the 1Dx won't be any worse.

If Nikon feels right then go for it. After all, you more likely to get the images you want with the equipment that feels good in your hand.
As for the 1Dx and big L glass delays... Flooding in Thailand, earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan comes to mind. I had the Pre production 1Dx for 10 days and I could not find any hardware faults with it. :thumbs:

That could well be the reasons. I did read a couple of things saying they were about to release it then pulled it at the last minute. Maybe best not to pay too much attention to these rumours anyway.

I am very tempted to go with the Nikon for the reasons stated. At the end of the day at this price point both Canon and Nikon are sure to be amazing cameras and I think anyone would be happy with either. :)

I love your bird shots by the way. The Great Grey owl has some amazing details in the feathers!

Only one way to find out. They do seem to be getting them in now, looking at the D4 thread.
Look at it this way Andy, it's taken you so long to decide, that you aren't obviously in a huge hurry! :D:lol::lol:

Glad I ordered when I did, beat the price increase and still a chance of the xqd pack.
