D40 or D50

I'll shortly have one of each and I'm In a quandary..

Both deliver the same Inge quality, simiakr AF etc

But D50 has the motor built in so can use older lens..my d5k doesn't so it woul e useful.

But D40'is more up to date and easier to use.

What'd you do? I'd get about the same for either if I sold one..

D50 was my first DSLR, so sentimental value there..!

They're only back up - main one is and will be D5000.

D50 of course you already have an easier camera with better screen and more features in the D5000 but you do not have a camera with built in motor. Although if I were you I'd sell the lot and buy a D90

I have a D50 and a D40x and I prefer the D50 by loads.

The D40x is slow in the menus and back screen. You get 5 AF points on the D50 vs 3 on the D40x. ISO goes to higher on the D40x but I haven't really tested it as it's the 55-200 I use in high ISO and that won't AF on that body.

IQ is fine on the D50 (up to ISO800 anyway) and so long as you don't crop too far the D50 will print at 12" v 10" perfectly well.

D40x's monitor wipes the floor with the D50 though.

Edit: FWIW I find the D50 easier to use as you can do more via direct access over the D40x.

Well I think that's decided then - only things I'd loose from getting rod of the D40 would be

Large LCD
ISO 3200 (which is a push anyway)
Both taking the same battery for space when packed etc

Everything else - small body, more modern interface etc - I already have and it already better in the D5000.

Plus, from memory, I really loved the way the D50 felt in the hand - really chunky and solid.

It all boils down tonfunds, and I I could I would get the D90, but as I've spent a lot in insurance for my D5000, I'd be loosing too much.

Can't wait for D50 to arrive now!!
